Topowokia

Toponesia is the process of forgetfulness of precious places, which afflicts us as we leave the world of our childhood and enter adult life (Heneghan 2013).

Topowokia is the process of remembering precious places as our memories are reminded by photographs, smells, objects and a myriad things that return a loved place to the the forefront of memory. The word, ‘woke’ implies an awakening of consiousness and to be aware of important social issues.

Awakening almost lost memories of place (the topos) is what topowokia attempts to describe. It may even cover the emotional experience of remembering places that you have never been to, but are part of your family history as revealed by old photo albums, the accents of relatives, old newspapers etc.

I am in that pram, Perth C1953.
